About 40 jobs are on offer for those willing to brave sub-zero temperatures and work in one of the most remote places on earth.

Antarctica New Zealand has launched a nation‑wide recruitment drive, inviting people across Aotearoa to work at Scott Base in Antarctica for the 2026/27 research season.

New Zealand’s small but mighty research station needs maintenance engineers, field staff, carpenters, chefs, mechanics, electricians, medics and technicians to keep Scott Base running and support the scientists working on the ice.

Help keep our home fires burning

“Behind every scientific discovery is a crew making sure the lights stay on,” says Antarctica New Zealand’s chief executive, Professor Jordy Hendrikx. “Scott Base runs on teamwork, skill and a strong work ethic.

“For decades, New Zealanders from all walks of life have headed south to keep our Antarctic programme moving. We’re looking for the next crew to carry that forward.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience: challenging, purposeful and unforgettable. You leave with more than memories; you leave knowing you’ve contributed to work that matters.”

Most roles will run from September through to February, though some positions will require applicants to embrace the challenge of working through an Antarctic winter, where sub-freezing temperatures can dip as low as minus 50 degrees.

It takes a team to support science

Scott Base exists so scientists can uncover how our planet is changing—it has served as New Zealand’s permanent Antarctic research station since 1957.

Antarctic Operations Delivery manager Kate McKenzie says the process of finding the right candidate is extensive.

“We’re not just looking for the right skill set, we’re looking for people who thrive in a communal environment.

“The people who succeed in Antarctica are those who are driven to be part of something bigger than themselves. It’s about working toward a shared goal, supporting one another, and building the kind of friendships that can stay with you for life.

“It can be tough – mentally and emotionally, but the rewards are absolutely worth it.”

The recruitment drive comes as New Zealand’s Antarctic programme continues to play a critical role in international climate and environmental research.
