About the Conference

Antarctica New Zealand and the Antarctic Science Platform are excited to announce the New Zealand Antarctic Science Conference will be coming to Ōtautahi Christchurch next year. We will bring together some of the greatest minds in Antarctic research from around Aotearoa New Zealand and abroad, exploring the latest breakthroughs, biggest challenges and next frontiers.

Three days of Open Science Conference will be followed by a day of open workshops and then a final day of ASP-only workshops. Satellite activities are also being organised so you can network, upskill, reconnect and plan for the future.

“Antarctic Research: Global Impact”

We chose this theme to highlight the impact our research has, both in Antarctica and around the world.

As one of the critical engines of the global climate system, changes in the 'Great White South' are felt around the globe.

The information we gather on the ice is vital to understand how the world is changing. Our research provides information about how change will impact the rest of the world and how we might prepare.

Dr Andrew Meijers, British Antarctic Survey

Dr Andrew Meijers is a polar oceanographer and the Science Leader of the Polar Oceans team at the British Antarctic Survey. His research primarily focuses on Southern Ocean dynamics and its interaction with the Antarctic ice sheet and climate. He works extensively with observational data and coupled climate models, especially where it pertains to the Southern Ocean vertical and meridional circulation, including SubAntarctic Mode Water and Antarctic Bottom Water variability, and the impact of the Southern Ocean on global ocean properties.

He has significant leadership experience both as chief scientist aboard the RRS James Clark Ross and RRS Sir David Attenborough, as well as heading up major multi-centre and multi-national research consortia, such as ORCHESTRA and OCEAN ICE. He also sits on the Southern Ocean Observing System Executive Committee and is actively involved in the coordination and science planning for Antarctica InSync through the UK national committee and Horizon Europe SYNCHRONY project.
