Antarctica New Zealand is the Crown Entity that manages Scott Base, New Zealand's research station in Antarctica. Our head office is at the International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch, which houses the United States, Italian and Korean Antarctic programmes.

Each year ~26 fixed-term seasonal staff are employed to keep the home fires burning at Scott Base. The majority of staff will work over the summer season from September to February. The remaining staff (10-15 depending on the season) winter over, spending a total of 13 months on ice until the following season's staff arrive.

Several Christchurch staff will spend part of the summer season forming the Scott Base Leadership Team. Additional staff will support research events at Scott Base, and in the field.

~Nine New Zealand Defence Force staff are seconded to fill certain positions such as Communications Operators, Plant Operators and a Cargo Handler. A Compass Group employee manages the Scott Base shop and bar facilities during summer, and Downer provide a Telecommunications Technician who winters over.

Scott Base staff belong to one of three teams, responsible for:

  • Base Services: All administrative and domestic activities at Scott Base
  • Engineering: Day-to-day operation and maintenance of buildings, services, plant, and vehicles at Scott Base
  • Programme Support: Supporting all New Zealand science events and field activities
