Canterbury student heads to Antarctica

A talented young New Zealander is packing his bags to head to the ice during summer after being awarded a coveted Blake Antarctic Ambassadorship.

University of Canterbury student, Harry Seagar (21) has been selected from more than 100 applications to travel to Antarctica on 4 February 2019 as part of an experiential learning programme led by Antarctica New Zealand.

Seagar will work with scientists and staff at Scott Base to showcase the scientific work they carry out in the field and give an insight into day to day life in Antarctica. In partnership with Antarctica New Zealand, Harry will create and share new and engaging digital content to promote the important role Antarctica New Zealand has supporting science and environmental protection.

James Gibson, CEO of the Sir Peter Blake Trust says it will be a life-changing experience for Harry. “As a Blake Antarctic Ambassador Harry will develop new skills, knowledge and networks in one of the most stunning and challenging environments on the planet.

“Antarctica is the ultimate environment for experiential learning and adventure, which is at the core of all our Ambassador programmes. We look forward to seeing Harry use his creative talent to share his journey with other New Zealanders through new digital outreach channels.”

The Sir Peter Blake Trust, in partnership with Antarctica New Zealand, NIWA, the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Tara Expeditions Foundation are announcing 14 awards in total this year.

The Blake Ambassadors, aged 18-25 years, will be working alongside leading scientists, conservators and rangers, developing relationships and partnerships in their field of interest and experiencing the practical elements of their field of study.
