The research priorities for the platform include:

  1. Understanding the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet
  2. Understanding the impacts of change in the Antarctic atmosphere and Southern Ocean
  3. Understanding threats to ecosystem dynamics in the Ross Sea
  4. Understanding change in terrestrial and nearshore Antarctic environments, and the connections between them

Research will also be supported under the following cross-cutting themes:

  • Building innovation and interdisciplinary capability
  • Supporting/developing long-term data sets
  • Developing technology

In mid-December 2017, MBIE and Antarctica New Zealand held a workshop that brought together a small group of Antarctic scientists and government stakeholders with interests in Antarctic science outcomes. The workshop identified, for each of the above priorities, the high-level impacts that will be delivered through investment in the Antarctic Science Platform.
