Applicants must provide:

• a research proposal (maximum of five pages) which should include:
  • Research proposal title;
  • An abstract of the research proposal;
  • Context for your proposed research;
  • A description of the research goals;
  • An outline of the methodology;
  • An explanation of how the proposed research relates to The New Zealand Antarctic and Southern Ocean Science Directions and Priorities 2010-2020;
  • If relevant, an explanation of how the proposed research relates to one of the environmental management themes outlined on the Antarctic Postgraduate Scholarship home page;
  • If logistics support is required - the event that the applicant proposes to visit Antarctica with; or if the project is not associated with a pre-existing event, a description of the logistics needs including specific research site(s), approximate dates, vehicle and accommodation needs, and any specialised field personnel requirements;
  • Delineation between the proposed work and existing work if the proposed project is part of a pre-existing Antarctic research event.
• a brief CV;
• transcript of final year grades;
• two letters of reference in support of the application;
• proof of NZ citizenship/residency;

Application Review

Applications will be judged on scientific merit, relevance to the Directions and Priorities document, and the academic standing of the candidate.

Additional points will be awarded if the application is linked to one of the four environmental management themes (managing Antarctic tourism, managing national programme activities, managaing the natural Antarctic environment, and managing the risks associated with non-native species in Antarctica).

These criteria will be considered by a research committee appointed by Antarctica New Zealand. A final decision will be made by mid-April and all applicants will be notified shortly afterwards. Applications are made for the general postgraduate scholarship programme and Antarctica New Zealand will determine which successful applicant will get which scholarship.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

• registered/about to register in a postgraduate degree course in a New Zealand institution;
• a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand;
• part of an existing New Zealand Antarctic event if they have no previous Antarctic field experience

Prior to travelling to Antarctica, successful applicants will be required to:

• undergo a comprehensive medical examination (by their own doctor);
• complete a Preliminary Environmental Evaluation (PEE) to assess the impact of their proposed project on the Antarctic environment;
• hold a valid First Aid certificate.

After returning from Antarctica, scholars are required to:

• submit a logistics and science report to Antarctica New Zealand as part of the event reporting requirements;
• submit a final report (for all scholarships) at the end of the scholarship term and an interim report (Doctoral scholar) detailing the research and results to their sponsor and Antarctica New Zealand;
• acknowledge in any reports, future publications and all associated publicity the sponsor of the scholarship and Antarctica New Zealand.

Points to note

• due to logistics constraints, priority will be given to projects that are linked to pre-existing events that already have logistics approval;
• it is advised that applicants should have the support of their academic institution for the proposed project as the scholarships will not cover all academic and/or logistical needs;
• these scholarships are available to past recipients of Antarctica New Zealand Scholarships.
