380m midway point reached by RICE (Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution) project

A Kiwi-led group of scientists with logistics support from Antarctica New Zealand have drilled over half-way into the 800m slab of ice they’re camped on for the second season in the remote Roosevelt Island located 700km east of Scott Base. The Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) collaborative project involves seven countries (New Zealand, United States, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, and Italy).  More.

 

Antarctic Blue Whale photo-identification

Antarctica New Zealand is proud to support the Antarctic Blue Whale Project, a flagship collaborative research project bringing together shipping, logistics and scientific resources to better understand blue whale population health and dynamics over the last 50 years.  Part of the Southern Ocean Research Partnership (SORP), the project uses non-lethal research technqies so blue whales can be studied without loss or harm.  More.
 

Hon Murray McCully Announces Appointments to Board of Antarctica New Zealand

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully today announced three appointments to Antarctica New Zealand’s management board. Carolyn Burns, Tony O’Brien and Rob Fyfe will serve three-year terms on the board responsible for managing New Zealand’s programme in Antarctica.
  
“Board members are required to successfully guide New Zealand’s activities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. With these new appointments, I am confident the board has the right mix of skills and experience to do so,” Mr McCully says.
  
Professor Burns, a marine science expert, and Mr O’Brien, a media relations specialist, will begin their terms immediately.  Mr Fyfe’s term will commence on 1 February 2013, once he steps down as CEO of Air New Zealand.  Tenby Powell, a founder and director of Hunter Powell Investments, has been re-appointed for a second term. Hundreds attend Scott exhibition opening

More than 250 people attended the opening of Scott's Last Expedition at Canterbury Museum last night.
 
The stunning exhibition, officially opened by Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker, proved a huge success much to the delight of Museum Director Anthony Wright and Antarctic Heritage Trust Executive Director Nigel Watson.  More
 

Antarctic Pioneer Richard Barwick will be missed

Richard (Dick) Barwick's Antarctic achievements leave a legacy few associated with the icy continent are not familiar with.
 
Richard's first brush with the ice was as part of Sir Edmund Hillary's TAE support team in the summer of 1956/57. He returned the following summer as part of New
Zealand's role the Commonwealth Antarctic Research Programme.  Dick along with Barrie McKelvey, Peter Webb and Colin Bull were also the first research team to explore the McMurdo Dry Valleys in a 1958/59 VUWWAE expedition.  The Barwick Valley is named after Dick and likewise McKelvey Valley, Webb Glacier and Bull Pass after his colleagues.   Many of the Wright and Victoria Valley place names were named by these pioneers and Dick holds a very special place in NZ Antarctic history.
 
Since the 1980's Dick has become a world authority on Devonian fish with extensive field experience across Australia locating and examining fossils .  He has supervised 50 graduate students and retired in 1996 from ANU.
 
Sadly he passed away peacefully at the Canberra Hospital on 10th November 2012 aged  83.  A private funeral will be held at 11am on Tuesday 20th November at Tobin Bros Chapel, Belconnen.  An online guest book for your expressions is available here and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Cross or www.MSF.org.au
 
A celebration of Richard's life will be held at the Australian National University in the weeks to come.
 

Southern Lakes Helicopters arrives on the ice for their first season with Antarctica New Zealand

Hon Murray McCully believes there is a good chance the proposed marine protected area (MPA) in the Ross Sea region will be accepted in the long run

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) have agreed to hold a special meeting in July 2013 to break the deadlock of the 25 nations discussing the establishment of a MPA in Antarctica's Ross Sea region this week.  While disappointed at the outcome Hon. McCully was pleased that the members did agree on an additional meeting in 2013 and felt that New Zealand is well placed to play a leadership role in advancing the proposal. More.

 

Sir Peter Blake Trust announces 2012 Antarctic Youth Ambassadors

The Sir Peter Blake Trust has selected the 2012 Antarctic Youth Ambassadors.  The two ambassadors, Charles Wilkinson and Arran Whiteford, will travel to Antarctica during the 2012/13 field season for a couple of weeks where they will contribute to environmental and engineering work on the world’s coldest continent.  Read more

 

ANTARCTICA NEW ZEALAND CONFIRMS THIRD AND FINAL EREBUS REMEMBRANCE TRIP
