ANTARCTICA NEW ZEALAND ARTS FELLOWS SELECTED

New Zealand filmmaker, Roger Donaldson, writer, Kate De Goldi, multimedia artist, Jae Hoon Lee, and New Zealand Army artist, Matt Gauldie, are the four recipients of the 2011/12 Antarctica New Zealand Arts Fellowships. MID WINTER DINNER AT SCOTT BASE

Winter staff at Scott Base marked the 100th anniversary of Captain Scott’s famous mid-winter dinner with their own version based on the original menu. They were also able to celebrate with the Christchurch office of Antarctica New Zealand through a video link up. The mid-winter dinner is a time for Scott Base staff to celebrate the depths of the winter darkness, which lasts from April to August each year.
PETER JAMES SMITH: ICEBLINK

The first major exhibition of Antarctic works by Invited Artist, Peter James Smith, is being held at the John Leech Gallery in Auckland, 8-25 June 2011. Peter travelled to Antarctica and spent 10 days at Scott Base in January 2010. He says: This exhibition results from the immediate and profound effect of that experience—of darkness, history, artefacts, sublimity, death, heroism, and silence—and continues to provision and shape ongoing work under the umbrella term Iceblink. Phillip Melchior, of Wanaka, has been appointed to the Board of Antarctica New Zealand, the Crown Entity responsible for developing, managing and executing New Zealand Government activities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. SCOTT POLAR CENTENARY SCHOLARSHIP

To commemorate the centenary of Scott’s final expedition to the South Pole in 1911-12, the New Zealand and United Kingdom governments have established a prestigious new polar scholarship for an outstanding young polar scientist from New Zealand or the United Kingdom to study at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge.
